Quarterlette Q&A and Naturally Susan’s responses:

In our obsession with searching the blogosphere for, well, everything, we’ve learned a lot of DIY tricks on making everything from decorations to tie-dyed dresses to business cards. But little do we see tips on handcrafted skincare products.  Then two years ago, we met Susan Ng at a trunk show tucked away in the Fashion District.  After perusing tables full of gorgeous accessories, we landed at her line of naturally made creams, salves and scrubs.  Her company is called Naturally Susan’s and everything is made from natural and organic ingredients so you no longer have to agonize over whether or not what you’re putting on your skin is legit.

Below we asked Susan a few questions about her brand and about managing our twenty-something skin.

Working for yourself definitely has its benefits.  What are the pros and cons?

The best part about being your own boss, is being your own boss! You manage your own schedule and the direction in which you would like to focus your business. The most challenging part of working for yourself is that it’s often necessary to manage every aspect of the business, particularly at the early stages. It’s not easy especially when time is limited and so much needs to get done. This is where effective time management and self-discipline are essential. Create a schedule and try your best to stick to it.

Over coffee once, you told us how you sold product to a customer by showing that your products are all natural.  What is important about only using ingredients you can find in the earth?

Your skin is the largest organ on your body and it absorbs about 60% of what you put on it, so it’s important to be aware of the type of products you apply on your skin. From my research, I discovered so many product ingredients that were toxic, chemicals that could be damaging to our bodies. With that, it became even more critical that I look to nature and create products that were as pure and as close to nature as possible.

What is your secret weapon?

I started making skin care products for myself since I wanted chemical-free and fragrance-free products suitable for sensitive skin. Also, I wanted products that are effective and versatile since I used to travel so much for work. Simplifying my beauty routine and my travel bag are key to the products that I develop. So, what you’ll find in my product line are products like the Avocado Lavender Salve. Its concentrated and long-lasting formula is a great moisturizer for hands, lips, elbows, heels, and face. You’ll also find the Roll On Moisturizers that are long lasting, travel-size and can be used as natural perfumes too. My products are about skin-healthy. And, they’re about making our lives easier.

The older we get the more we learn that skin troubles are not just for teenagers.  What’s our best chance at glowing skin – or at least non-blemished complexions?

I’ve been there! Just when you thought you outgrew acne…you later learn that there’s something referred to as “adult acne.” When this happens, it’s best to seek advice from a medical practitioner since the body could be trying to tell you something. There are things that you can do that may be helpful in managing skin-related issues. Try to manage stress levels, exercise regularly, drink plenty of water to flush toxins out of the body, and maintain a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables. In addition, wash your face before going to bed to get rid of the day’s dirt and grime that could clog pores and cause breakouts. Also, remember to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen when heading outdoors even when it’s cloudy. The sun and ultra-violet rays can be strong and damaging to your skin. So, protect it and feed your skin properly from the inside and out to prolong your youthful glow.

It’s a bit daunting to go 100% natural, but in order to avoid harmful ingredients, what should we be looking out for on the label when choosing our beauty products?

The words “fragrance” and “parfum” are synonymous and represent two of the most worrisome words for me when it comes to product ingredient listings. These terms can comprise of 3,000+ different chemicals that may be too minute to list, so they are lumped into those terms. Also, try to avoid products that contain PARABENS, sulfates, petrochemicals and artificial colors. These are chemicals that have been linked to health issues.

What is your definition of success? What is the best thing you have ever done for your career and/or personal life?

I enjoy meeting people, sharing stories and learning how we can help each other.  As my business continues to expand, I measure success with each person that I meet and how much we can grow together. I’ve taken some chances in life and I encourage others to to pursue their passions as well. Doing some things that may be out of our comfort zone can help to challenge our capabilities, expand our skill sets, and help us to discover what we truly enjoy doing in life.
