How to be an It Girl

The “It” Girl.  So many of us want to be one.  But what exactly is an “it” girl anyway?  According to Michela Aramini, founder of The Lovely It Girl – a brand consulting firm dedicated to inspiring and empowering women in business and in life – an “it” girl is the “bold, beautiful, brilliant woman we were all born to be”.  Through her business, Michela is helping women uncover their strengths, passions and their own personal brand.  Check out our interview below as Quarterlette chats a bit more with Michela about herself, her business, and about all the fabulous “it” girls she’s working with.

Let’s get through the basics.  Who are you, both personally and then professionally as the founder of The Lovely It Girl?

I’m the founder of The Lovely It Girl, a personal brand consulting boutique in New York dedicated to inspiring and empowering women to become the bold, beautiful, brilliant “It” girls they were born to be. I show women how to create personal and professional lives they love. It begins with designing bespoke personal brands that clarify and communicate their “It” (unique intrinsic value) and helping them connect to their Clique of personal brand cheerleaders both online and offline.

I take an inside-out approach to personal branding because I believe your personal brand should represent the woman you were born to be, not the woman you think you should be. Whether you want to land your dream job or start your own business, knowing how to clearly and consistently communicate your “It” in a compelling way is the key to becoming the “It” girl you were born to be and styling a life you love from the inside-out.

You started your career in a role that we imagine many of our readers would kill to be doing – working for a publishing company in NYC.  What was the moment you realized that it wasn’t for you?  What steps did you take to walk away and course correct?

One year ago, I landed my “dream job” at a world-renowned publishing company in New York. After only a few months the sparkle faded and I was left feeling disillusioned and lost. I would wake up everyday, drag myself to work, and sit in my cubicle asking myself “Is this really it?” I secretly craved something more: a life I truly loved from the inside out.

I started to network with women entrepreneurs whose stories resonated with me and whose confidence and conviction inspired me to stop waiting for someone to hand me the life I truly wanted, and instead go out and create it. The only problem was that I had no idea what I wanted to do! It was around that time I read a quote by Diane Von Furstenberg that changed everything: “I didn’t always know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the kind of woman I wanted to be.” This made me realize that the first step to discovering what I wanted to do was discovering the woman I wanted to be.

I started to take steps to consciously reconnect with what I now call my inner It Girl: the loving voice that has always guided me in the direction of my truth. I discovered that my inner It Girl is a bold, beautiful, brilliant woman who wants it all, does it all, and has it all—all on her own terms. A woman who isn’t willing to settle for anything less than a life she truly loves from the inside, out. Knowing the woman I wanted to be helped me discover what I was meant to do.

What inspired you to launch The Lovely It Girl? What was the first step you took to make it happen?

I realized that, like so many other young women, I had fallen prey to the It Girl Illusion – the empty promise impressed on young women by the media that if we work hard to create lives that look perfect on the outside we’ll live happily ever after. I became passionate about redefining the It Girl: a bold, beautiful brilliant woman who wants it all, does it all, and has it all, all on her own terms. A woman who is on a mission to create a personal and professional life she loves from the inside, out.

I wanted to help other young, entrepreneurial women create personal brands that empower them to become the It Girls they were born to be by clarifying and communicating their “It” (unique value) and connecting to their Clique of personal brand cheerleaders both online and offline.

The first step I took to launch The Lovely It Girl as a business was to first launch the brand – my personal brand! I established my online presence by clarifying and communicating my “It” Message and Mission Statement on social media, and began curating content on personal branding and personal development to establish myself as a personal branding expert. Offline I began attending lots of women’s networking events in New York and expanding my network.

You do an amazing job mentoring women and helping them find focus and confidence, but who mentors you?  Who or what has influenced you to get you where you are today?

I’m inspired every day by my amazing network of It Girls who are turning their passions, purpose and prowess into their professions and creating lives they love from the inside out. Some of my personal It Girl Icons include Marie Forleo, Danielle Laporte, Gabrielle Bernstein, and Sophia Amoruso.

What makes you excited to get out of bed in the morning?

Knowing that each day is a new opportunity to spread my message, spark my movement, and make my mark on the world.

When you’re having a frantic day, what is the go-to routine that helps you de-stress?

A hot yoga class at Modo Yoga or mani pedi at tenoverten will usually do the trick!

What makes you feel confident?

Owning my “It.” It’s so easy to compare yourself to others who seem to “have it all” so it’s important to remind yourself that your goal in life isn’t to be the best, it’s to be the best version of YOU. Knowing that I am one of a kind and that no one can be me better gives me the confidence and conviction I need to conquer each day with grace, gratitude and gumption!

What is the best piece of advice you have been given? And in turn what advice would you offer women who are looking to branch out from their corporate jobs?

The best piece of advice I received was from my mother (a doctor turned entrepreneur) who told me that your business (and brand) will only grow as much as you do. Creating a personal and professional life you love requires a lot of hard work… most importantly on yourself! You have to constantly step outside of your comfort zone and get comfortable being uncomfortable. The difference between where you are now and where you want to be doesn’t lie in your external circumstances, it lies in you. Your reality is your responsibility. Change yourself and you will change your life.

What has been the happiest moment of running your own business?  What was your biggest challenge or lesson learned?

The happiest moment of running my business was during a call with a client. We were reviewing her personal brand strategy and she interrupted me to say, “We barely know one another yet somehow you’ve managed to capture my essence and infuse my brand with my best self. You are clearly doing what you were born to do.”

What’s next for you and The Lovely It Girl?

I’m excited to take The Lovely It Girl online by launching a personal branding program in 2015 that will help entrepreneurial women everywhere create personal brands that empower them to become the It Girls they were born to be!

I’m also excited to introduce TLIG to more college women (it’s never to early to create your personal brand!) and would love to do a speaking tour at sororities across the U.S. and Canada.
