Urban Escapes with Jambu

There’s this cramped feeling that comes over me when I’ve been in the city too long. It’s never more prominent than over the summer when the place becomes stuffy (and rather stinky) and I suddenly find myself itching to get out every weekend. For whatever reason that same feeling came over me by the end of this long winter. Perhaps it was a bout of cabin fever from being stuck inside too long during the unrelenting cold and stubborn snow.

What I think my fellow city dwellers and I often forget is that “nature” often isn’t more than a public transportation ride away. Whether it’s DC’s Rock Creek Park (miles of trails within the city limits) or New York’s Cold Spring (just an hour away), you can easily throw on a pair of leggings, your hiking boots and a light sweater and spontaneously find yourself surrounded by woods. Bring along some scrumptious trail mix and a camera and I’ve just described my perfect day.

On a recent trip to my parents’ house in Connecticut I took full advantage of their proximity to the woods (something I hated as a teenager). During my trip, my afternoons were spent photographing our foggy backyard or exploring the local Connecticut Audubon Society Sanctuary, somewhere I hadn’t been since I was a kid. The best part was after a day of fresh air, I easily could have been on a Metro-North train pointing me to NYC, back to the lights and an energizing social scene of a different kind. In this case, though, I choose my fluffy bed and waking up to my parents’ homemade brunch.

The takeaway is that we shouldn’t settle for our environment and stay stagnant because we don’t know the options. Pick your adventure. Make it spontaneous.

Jambu was kind enough to let us test our their Vista hiking boots and we loved them! They’re made for adventure – water proof for splashing through puddles and have an awesome grip if you’re into scaling rocks like I am.   If you’re looking for a good pair, check them out here and use promo code “jambulet” [expires midnight 4/16] for free two-day shipping!

Decorating An Apartment, Piece By Piece – Giveaway!

Sunset Rocking Chair in White Lifestyle Image

You know those moments that occur while browsing Instagram or Pinterest when you start to feel a small (ok, or large) pang of jealousy as you admire the drool-worthy, perfectly curated homes?  I know those moments well.

I’ve always loved admiring pretty interior spaces.  I’m not much of a fashion girl…my personal style is fairly basic.  But home design?  That’s my jam.  Colorful, patterned pillows.  Fragrant candles.  Fluffy white, cloud-like bedding.  I love it all.

Last year I lucked out when a friend moved out of her rent stabilized, sun drenched studio.  I snagged it from her and couldn’t wait make it my own.  All of a sudden my free time was occupied with home blogs and shopping sites, dreaming up my ideal oasis.  But then reality set in. Furniture is crazy expensive $$$!   Even small accessories have price tags that equate to the cost of a 5 star meal.

In an effort to stay financially responsible, I kept a good amount of my furniture from my previous apartment and instead tried to focus on small things here and there to liven up the space.  A new duvet cover that I had been eyeing.  Making large prints of some of my favorite travel photos and framing them for the blank walls.  Purchasing a dazzling new coffee table as my larger investment piece.

As with many things in life, achieving your ideal end result doesn’t always happen overnight.  It’s best to focus on small goals and enjoy those mini-milestones.  In this case, decorating your space a few pieces at a time, over a longer time frame.

Recently I learned about this awesome online home retailer called Apt2B which offers all sorts of great pieces for relatively affordable prices.  It’s perfect for those of us who want to invest in creating a dreamy space while also being able to still pay our rent for that space we’re creating.   The selection is large…you can pretty much find anything and everything, in a variety of styles.  And, there’s free delivery.   So, with this new retail discovery of ours, we wanted to celebrate Apt2B by offering our readers a fab giveaway (see above image).

Enter the Rafflecopter below to win one of their Sunset Rocking Chairs in the color of your choice and add a little funky, modern sweetness to your space.  *Note: The more rafflecopter items you complete, the more entries you get! Good luck!

-First Thanksgiving dinner fully in my hands

That’s right, I’m the boss this year. In insisting I host Thanksgiving dinner it seems as though I have promoted myself from sides-only duty to covering the whole shebang. I swear I am only slightly freaking out about all of this, but ready to dive right in. With one week left till the big day, I have my Thanksgiving Survival Guide ready to go. Now, all I need is my mom to be on call to answer all my questions and a fool-proof turkey recipe.  Anyone care to share?

Pretty Little Things in Blue

Pretty Little Things in Blue

I’ve had a dangerously powerful love for the Anthropologie Home section for as long as I can remember.  Whenever I go into the store, I head straight for the home area which has an incredible way of engulfing you in this whimsical, serene, creative, beautiful lifestyle.  I don’t know what it is…whether it’s the products themselves, the way the curators pair items together so perfectly, or – most likely – both. Realistically, are most of us in a place where we can afford to redecorate our entire home with these lovely items? Probably not. But sometimes it’s nice to add a little something special here and there – whether it’s a candle that instantly relaxes you or a larger investment piece like a colorful statement chair to add some spice to your room.  I hope you enjoy some of these Anthro finds as much as I do!
